About Wold Music Days 2003
The ISCM World Music Days are one of the most important events in contemporary music worldwide. The first concert of this kind was held in 1923 in Salzburg and in 2003 we shall have the opportunity to celebrate 80 years of the World Music Days in Slovenia. The initiator and nominee of the candidature – the Slovene ISCM Section – actively works with the Society of Slovene Composers, and the technical organiser of the event is Cankarjev dom, Slovenia’s main cultural and congress centre. The festival as a cultural event is of great importance for the whole country and will be held under the auspices of the Slovene government and the Ministry of Culture. Preparations for the project began three years ago and are proceeding with rising intensity. The festival theme “Music for the Third Millennium” is open to all new ideas and links the past with the future. The festival will present the latest and best achievements from creators from all over the world. The call for works was answered by many national ISCM sections and invited authors and publishers to send compositions not more than five years old. Some music from earlier dates will also be performed at the festival, written by eminent composers and honorary members of the ISCM. In addition to concerts for orchestras, groups, choirs, ballets, symphonic wind or chamber music, electronic and computer music we also intend to organize some interesting accompanying events. The focus of the World Music Days will be Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, but the event will make its presence felt across the whole country. Other venues – Predjama castle, the famous Postojna cave, Piran, Kostanjevica na Krki and Bled – are all situated within easy reach from the capital. Slovenia’s advantageous location provides easy and uncomplicated access to all visitors arriving from all parts of Europe. We also expect visitors from further afield, and wish to express a hearty welcome to all those who wish to listen to the latest music achievements our age has to offer. |
